What is Ironmongery?

The term ironmongery is related to the construction sector, which basically means the manufacture and distribution of goods made from metals including iron, steel, aluminum and brass, and sometimes plastics too, are being used in all kinds of buildings. The goods described as architectural hardware that comprise door furniture like knobs, handles, locks, hinges, hooks and similar other fittings, and window furniture like letter plates, closers, handrails and other window fittings. The other architectural ironmongery items are manufactured and supplied for wholesale and commercial uses in commercial complexes, offices and in other types of buildings. The supplier of these consumer goods is called ironmonger.

The use of Ironware in residential buildings, churches and other types of constructions has been prevalent from a long time back where local blacksmiths were the only source of producing these items. Only after industrial revolution, the advances had taken place and production and use of ironmongery was increased and became more widespread. And then, large chain stores started replacing local ironmongery shops and local ironmongers’ works.

Today, modern ironmongery items are being used in every construction that is taking place but the use of old-fashioned ironmongery items have not been stopped. They are still for old or historically important buildings. Also, those living in modern homes are using traditional ironmongery items, especially as an overall décor to doors and windows, to give their homes an ancient feel. Also, electrical fittings, cabinetry hardware and door knockers among others help lend an additional antique feel to a newly constructed, modern building. However, the old style ironmongery products that are being used nowadays are finished with modern techniques like powder coating or galvanization so that they do not get damaged rust, especially iron made products.
